Coalition Co-Coordinator (Part-Time)

Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (WPSR) is a 40-year-old, physician-led advocacy organization working to create a healthy, just, peaceful and sustainable world. We take on the gravest current threats to human health and survival - nuclear weapons, economic inequity, and a climate crisis driven by dependence on fossil fuels. Through its three issue-based programs, WPSR leverages the credible and trusted voice of healthcare professionals to educate the public, influence decision-makers, and promote public policies that support our mission -- including local, state-level, and national action to address the climate crisis. 

Washington Against Nuclear Weapons (WANW) is a statewide coalition, led by WPSR, that aims to reduce and eliminate the US nuclear weapons arsenal and to prevent nuclear war. This person in this position will have a unique opportunity to lead and contribute to the work of the largest anti-nuclear coalition of its kind in the country. This position will work alongside a staff coalition coordinator to support the operations, development, engagement, and activities of the 50+ statewide member organizations that make up the coalition. Required qualifications, skills, and experience

  • Strong commitment to peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons 

  • Capacity to work up to 10 hours per week

  • Experience organizing and mobilizing volunteers via phone and email

  • Well-organized, resourceful, pro-active, and detail-oriented 

  • Clear and compelling written and oral communicator

  • Ability to work cooperatively with WPSR staff and WANW coordinating committee

  • Commitment to equity, justice and engaging and supporting frontline communities

Responsibilities

Coalition Development

  • Coordinate and contribute to the expansion and development of the statewide Washington Against Nuclear Weapons coalition

  • Travel, occasionally, within WA state to recruit new and develop existing coalition organizations 

Communications & Media

  • Develop and help execute the coalition’s communications and media strategies 

  • Build relationships with media and pursue media placements

  • Engage WANW member organizations and members of the public across the state through active communication, education, and sharing opportunities for action

  • Represent and speak on behalf of WANW and relevant issues at public events

Advocacy

  • Build and coordinate a growing coalition of endorsers for statewide legislative advocacy campaigns during the WA state legislative session

  • Coordinate public outreach and educational activities on nuclear weapons issues

  • Support frontline community solidarity work to fight for nuclear justice across WA State through community education and direct advocacy

  • Mobilize Coalition member organizations and district constituents to create and seize upon opportunities to influence members of Congress on the WANW policy platform

Working Conditions

  • The WANW coalition is funded, staffed, and supported primarily by Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (WPSR). It is expected that most of the work of co-coordinator can and will be conducted remotely / from home. As needed, WPSR may be able to offer space to work and can provide limited meeting space and other resources needed to carry out the work.
