THE DR. DAVE HALL EMERGING LEADERS IN NUCLEAR ABOLITION PROGRAM
Program Overview
The threat of nuclear weapons is rising, and we need the activists, organizers, and leaders of the future to be ready to confront this threat. In 2024, a longtime advocate for peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons, Dr. David Hall, passed away after a long battle with cancer. As a leader and former president in WPSR, PSR, and the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action, Dave never gave up on this cause, and believed strongly in the need for the next generation to become advocates for abolition. We aim to honor his legacy with this program.
WPSR is proud to offer an exciting annual opportunity, through the Dr. David Hall Emerging Leaders in Nuclear Weapons Abolition Program, to train a group of young people on the history of nuclear weapons and anti-nuclear activism while preparing them for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Hiroshima, Japan, site of the 1945 atomic bombing.
The program begins with four learning sessions that cover the history of nuclear weapons, anti-nuclear activism, the connection between nuclear weapons and Washington state and the present landscape.
The highlight of the program is a week-long visit to the city of Hiroshima with our friends at the World Friendship Center. This visit will include meeting with atomic bomb survivors, the Hibakusha, visiting the Hiroshima Peace Park and Museum, and participating in the 80th year commemoration of the bombing.
Following the participant sessions and travel to Hiroshima, our participants will present on their experiences and be directly connected to opportunities to continue their anti-nuclear weapons journey with organizations like ours.
Scholarships
Thanks to the support of WPSR and the American Committee of the World Friendship Center, WPSR is able to provide a select number of travel scholarships to participants who we hope will be inspired to become future activists and leaders of the movement to address the greatest existential threat to health and human survival: Nuclear Weapons.
