There are numerous ways to become a WPSR Legacy Circle Member by making a lasting gift to support our mission in your estate plans:

• A bequest in my Will or Living Trust

• A beneficiary designation in a Retirement Account (IRA, 401k, 403b)

• A beneficiary designation in a Life Insurance Policy

• A Charitable Gift Annuity or Charitable Remainder Trust

In as little as one sentence, you can complete your gift. This type of donation to WPSR in your will or living trust helps ensure that we can continue to protect Washington from the gravest threats to health.

A. For a New or Revised Will

To include Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility in your will or living trust, you can provide the following text directly to your estate attorney.

Option 1: Unrestricted Gift (Most Helpful)

This option gives WPSR the ultimate flexibility to direct your gift to whichever of our core pillars—climate change, nuclear weapons, or health equity—is facing the most urgent need at that time.

“I give, devise, and bequeath to Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility, a non-profit corporation organized and existing under the laws of the State of Washington, , Tax ID 91-1123316, with the business address of 2524 16th Ave S. #300, Seattle, WA 98144:

• The sum of $__________ [or]

• __________% of my estate [or]

• The residue of my estate [or]

• Other property/equity (herein described) ____________

to be used for its general tax-exempt purposes under the direction of its Board of Directors.”

Option 2: Restricted Gift (Pillar-Specific)

If you wish to direct your future legacy specifically toward one of our advocacy programs, you can use the following restricted language:

“I give, devise, and bequeath to Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility, a non-profit corporation organized and existing under the laws of the State of Washington, Tax ID 91-1123316, with the business address of 2524 16th Ave S. #300, Seattle, WA 98144:

• The sum of $__________ [or]

• __________% of my estate [or]

• The residue of my estate [or]

• Other property/equity (herein described)______________

to be used exclusively to support WPSR’s programs focused on [insert choice: Climate Change / Nuclear Weapons Non-Proliferation / Economic Inequity and Health]. If, in the judgment of the Board of Directors, the need for this specific program no longer exists, the Board may use the funds for purposes as near as possible to my original intent.”

B. For a Codicil (to an existing will).

A “ codicil ” is a legal document that amends an existing will. Rather than voiding the original will and drafting a new one, a codicil attaches to the will and overrides only the specific provisions it addresses.

Everything else in the original will remains in full force. It can be drafted by the testator (the person whose will it is) without an attorney, and it takes effect under the same legal standards as the will itself — meaning it must be signed and witnessed in the same manner (It clearly states the date of the original will and references specific clauses being altered; the testator must be 18, of sound mind and acting voluntarily; and it requires signing in front of two disinterested adult witnesses who are not beneficiaries — and who don’t need to be aware of the provisions of the codicil). Copies should be kept with/physically attached to the original document and all copies of your will.

Sample Codicil (Sample only. Not legal advice. For that, you can consult an attorney licensed in your state):

CODICIL TO THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF [FULL LEGAL NAME]

I, [Full Legal Name], of [City, State] declare this Codicil to my Last Will and Testament dated [original will date].

FIRST: I hereby add the following beneficiary to Article [X] of my Will: I give, devise, and bequeath [X% of my residuary estate / the sum of $XX,XXX / the following described property: ___________] to Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility, a non-profit corporation organized and existing under the laws of the State of Washington, Tax ID 91-1123316, located at 2524 16th Ave S. #300, Seattle, WA 98144, to be used:

• …for its general tax-exempt purposes under the direction of its Board of Directors.

Or

• …exclusively to support WPSR’s programs focused on [insert choice: Climate Change / Nuclear Weapons Non-Proliferation / Economic Inequity and Health]. If, in the judgment of the Board of Directors, the need for this specific program no longer exists, the Board may use the funds for purposes as near as possible to my original intent.

SECOND: In all other respects I ratify and confirm all of the provisions of my said last Will and Testament dated on the _________ day of ______________, 20__.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I sign, publish and declare this instrument to be a Codicil to my last will and testament in the presence of the persons witnessing said Codicil at my request this _____ day of _______ 20__.
